Forgotten Stories of the 2nd Great Awakening
Samuel Huber's Autobiography & Revival Stories 1814-1858 distinguishes itself from the linear, day-to-day accounts of this period. Instead, it is a collection of individual stories compiled from the author's experiences and those gleaned from close friends and colleagues. It was because of their urging that Rev. Huber was prompted to publish them together in one volume in 1858 after forty years of ministry.
Rev. Samuel Huber began serving the gospel as a minister for the Church of the United Brethren in Christ in his hometown of Chambersburg, PA, less than 60 miles from the church's founding site in Frederick, MD. Established in 1800, the United Brethren hold the distinction of being the first American-born denomination that was not an offshoot of an existing organization.
While the stories gathered within these pages were known and shared within certain circles for over a century and a half, they have remained virtually unknown to those outside of them until now. Shining brighter than ever, they have been updated and modernized for clarity and supplemented with maps, mini-biographies, illustrations, and occasional commentary for greater context.
Each story, collected from Huber's experiences in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Ohio, provides a unique and personal perspective into those times of revival and awakening that have been too often forgotten and ignored.
